Entrepreurship Lessons That The University Won't Teach You
University life is a giant leap towards adulthood and if you intend to become an entrepreneur after University, there's no amount of reading or attending of seminars or coaching that can prepare you enough for the real world. The transition from amateur student entrepreneur to real life business man can be tricky and complicated.
To this end, i have compiled a couple of lessons I have learnt in my own journey to help smoothen your transition. I hope it helps.
Attendance Is A Must
Unlike the University, you cannot afford to skip a day of your life as an entrepreneur. You have to wake up and turn up everyday. No matter the situation, whatever the circumstance you just have to turn up and you have to be punctual about it.
Free Time Is A Myth
Remember when a Professor decides he is too lazy to come to class and comes up with one excuse or another? I'm sure you remember, you probably prayed for days like that. As an entrepreneur however, except your business is fully operational and successfully running, there is no such thing as free time. So, while your friends may work the traditional 9-5 jobs and party on Friday nights, you have to work 24 hours a day, 8 days a week.
You Are On Your Own
As a start-up you will be working long hours drawing up that business plan, running the business, finding the right network of people to grow you and doing a lot of reading and research. This does not leave a lot of time for social life hence, no time for a lot of people. You have to pave your own way and write your own story.
Scheduling Is Another Myth
You're probably used to having classes from Monday to Friday and you knew exactly what time the classes will end. As an entrepreneur, you cannot exactly plan everyday out. Some things may come in and disrupt plans you have made. You even have to work on weekends.
Multi Tasking is Key, But Keep Your Eyes On The Goal
University taught you how to read eight subjects per semester with different topics in them. In real life, you will need to prioritize and focus on the main goal.
Friends Are Not Just For Video Games
As an entrepreneur, it is almost mandatory that you hit rough patches. There are days you will make wrong decisions, there are days you will fail at something, there are days you will doubt yourself. These are days you will need the support of your real friends to see you through the difficult times.
Grades Are Just Fancy Alphabets
Running a business has absolutely nothing to do with your First Class result or your 5.0 CGPA. It has more to do with you as a person and the passion you put towards the actualisation of your dream. So if you don't do well in the University, it doesn't mean you won't become successful or wealthy I. The future.
To this end, i have compiled a couple of lessons I have learnt in my own journey to help smoothen your transition. I hope it helps.
